Hardwood Floor Polyurethane Peeling

Floor finishes peel because the floor was contaminated or improperly prepped when the finish was applied.

This laminate floor was purchased from lumber liquidators their good stuuf. We are now experiencing the same problem of top finish peeling. This often leads to some head scratching trying to figure out how it happened. Before you act you need to identify the issues.

I have refinished multiple dressers tables chairs beds etc. It is 50 living room 25 kitchen and 25 dining room. Less so in the lr dr and foyer but still peeling in. Last week we went through the whole process.

At many of the board seams in the kitchen the polyurethane is peeling up and bubbling. Sometimes the coats will lay down flat and smooth and look good after the floor finisher has left only to receive a call later that the finish is separating from the floor. I used an oil based stain and followed that with an oil based poly. So the idea of refinishing a hardwood floor did not scare me.

We recently had our floors screened and recoated throughout the house. I am supposed to close on a house this week and i have a question regarding the hardwood floors. The floor has a pre attached foam pad to the board. In the dining rooms and entry way there are rugs on the hardwood floors with no pads and apparently water must have been spilled in a couple of areas and has seeped through to the floor because the polyurethane is peeling off in long strips.

This floor covers one large area 650 sq ft. For example it s not uncommon for old floors to start peeling as the old polyurethane topcoat starts to deteriorate. Dirt or chemicals on top of a floor or embedded in its finish can cause subsequent coats of finish to flake or peel off. Pulled carpet removed staples countersink any nail heads belt sanded with 36g sanded with 60g sanded with 80g sanded with 120g w each grit we went over the floor once but overlapped boards vacuumed hand wiped with cloth again with tack cloth applied 1 layer of stain let dry for 24 hrs wiped the floors used a tack cloth applied 1st coat of poly.

Nobody likes to see polyurethane peel especially just after refinishing the floor. Ultimately you will most likely have to refinish the floor if the polyurethane won t stop peeling. They were recoated with high gloss oil base polyurethane 2 coats. A contaminated floor won t hold finish.

This is what i did. I am having issues with polyurethane peeling off my hardwood floors. The manufacturer says it is caused by moisture underneath the planks. Continue reading finish didn t chemically bond and is lifting off.
